We also love wood and what a shame to take the trees that are removed to the landfill to be chipped up or burnt. Why not repurpose this tree into merchantable boards or slabs.
So 3 years ago we bought a Lucas 7/23 sling blade mill. We bought this model and type of saw for its versatility. It has 3 attachments. A large circular saw allowing the sawyer to cut dimensional lumber. A chainsaw slabbing attachment accommodating a 60″ wide cut for cutting large slabs. And a planer allowing the sawyer to flatten and plane the slabs once they have been dried in one of our kilns.
We started out just wanting to turn some of these logs into something better than firewood. We had no idea the time and energy it would take to turn a tree into a board. So we started milling, slabbing up logs for 2 years. Once cut, the boards or slabs are stacked and strapped with small boards called stickers in between them so air can flow through the boards. It is air dried for approximately 1 year per inch or down to about 20% and then it goes into a kiln where it is further dried into single digit moisture content.
The final steps are in flattening and planing the board. We lay it on a deck which is typically a large log with a few slabs ripped off the top. This makes a table that won’t move. Fasten a board to the table and make a pass with a planer taking typically an 1/8 of an inch off. Flip it over and do it again and again till it’s flat and smooth. Each board is different. With each pass the woods features, grain, and even the defects come alive!

Jack and his team are also drying out slabs from large trees that are needing to be removed. I had a large live oak that was damaged by several hurricanes and declining from salt intrusion, so I made the difficult decision to remove this tree prior to building a new home on site.
